New Paintings: Kintsugi
My most recent paintings, created with specially ground mineral pigments and oxidized silver leaf from Japan, have taken a new turn during the global trauma of 2020. In response to some technical weather related challenges, I began filling cracks in my paintings with gold leaf inspired by Kintsugi, a Japanese method of repairing broken pottery resulting in a stronger, more beautiful work of art.
This work embodies a healing process, invoking the desire many of us have to live in a world healed from illness, violence, division, and despair. May the world’s health recover. May we learn to communicate non-violently. May we regain hope for a stronger, more beautiful world where justice and equality are the norm. May we view creation with awe. May art reign.
