The paintings in the exhibition, Prompts, originate from an inquiry into the elusive relationship of the unconscious to the conscious mind.
The result is a series of double-sided hinged oil paintings on panels that feature doubled figures, almost identical in nature, with their backs to the viewer. These paintings can be rotated 180 degrees, presenting a new perspective of the figures as shadow selves. The reverse side of each painting also reveals a small reliquary niche suggesting an interior life. As a result of their scale and potential for movement, the panels become reminiscent of books, gates, doors, and stage sets opening to an imagined world. There are also allusions to the house archetype where memories are stored.
