In 2018, I began to paint with the ancient Japanese materials and processes of traditional Nihonga to interpret my contemporary imagery. The Nihonga techniques involve applying Japanese silver leaf with a special glue called Dosa, oxidizing it with sulphur, and stopping it with another coat of Dosa. Dosa makes painting with Japanese colored mineral pigments over silver leaf possible in a wide range of texture, color and detail, an exciting new development for me. I’m grateful to Judith Kruger and Mami Takahashi for their expertise and assistance in this endeavor.
